In the historical aspect discusses the development of water management complex of the Middle Volga region. The stages of creation of artificial ponds associated with the most significant events on the construction and use of ponds, small, medium and large reservoirs. Since the first stage appeared small ponds at mill installations and other household needs, the third stage is associated with the construction and filling of the Kuibyshev and Saratov reservoirs, as well as with the creation of ponds and small reservoirs of fish-breeding and ameliorative value. For the modern stage is characterized by the decline of engineering and the reduction of use of water reservoirs for the irrigation of agricultural land.
