The study focuses on the economic mechanism for compensation of damage to water bodies and structures because of violation of the Russian Federation’s water law.

The article briefly describes the results of developing the ways to improve the damage compensation mechanism, main working assumptions and directions of improvement – “Methods for evaluation of damage caused to water bodies and structures due to violation of the water law 2009”.
