This joint monograph analyzes the current interpretations of soil and land. It explains the theoretical principles of environmental regulation of soil and land, based on the relationship between their conditions and anthropogenic impact on them and the definition of allowable conditions and impact limits. Characteristics of the sources of anthropogenic impact on soil and land are given. Criteria are proposed for assessment of soil and land quality and of anthropogenic impact, taking into account natural conditions and land uses.
Approaches to comprehensive assessment of land, with account of all environmental elements of given landscape, are explained.  Ways to maintain a certain equilibrium between the allowable conditions of soil and land and the impact on them are considered, with indication of quality management practices for soil and other elements of natural environment under land management, land and environmental control and monitoring, landscape planning and environmental expertise in concrete land areas.
