A value of irrigation water shortage for the Fergana Valley is assessed on the basis of GIS and computer modeling for various scenarios. The scenarios take into account amounts of water delivery during the growing season and water use in irrigated agriculture for: 1) average year (2000); 2) “bad or dry” year (1998); and 3) optimized irrigation depths. The assessment identified areas within the Valley that suffer from water shortage. Dependence of water availability conditions on the operation regime of the Toktogul reservoir and on historical land use pattern characterized by excessive irrigation water use was analyzed.
